How do hotels get their star ratings?

Q) I stayed in a hotel in the UK last month, it was supposedly a 5 star hotel but it wasn't any better than a Travel Lodge. How do these hotels get the ratings? How often are they assessed? This hotel was friendly and service was great but there was no bath, only a shower, no swimming pool, gym or anything like that. Room was spacious but dated.

A) I'm not sure of the official way it gets done, but it tends to be if a hotel has, bar, restaurant, pool, gym, room service, sauna, and good location they tend to get a 5* rating, even though the furnishings may be very dated and a bit scruffy, where as a hotel that has no pool, gym etc may only be rated as a 3 star and be very nice inside. Best bet, check out trip advisor and the hotels website before you book!

Can people recommend good value hotels in Manhattan and must see and do things in NY/surrounding area?

Q) To mark getting on with my life after months spent getting over my wife leaving me, I am packing a rucksack and flying to New York - no pre-booking hotels for me! I am spending 8 days and would love peoples tips and advice, especially on where to stay (not too expensive, but reasonable quality) and what are real must see's? Am also think about hiring a car and heading to new hampshire for a few days - any tips? Thanks in advance all!

A) The Belvedere Hotel. 48th Street, 8th Ave. It is across the road from Broadway, If you walk up the little road from the Hotel you end up on Times Sqaure, 10 mins from Central Park. I have stayed there all the times i've been to NY and i love the hotel. It is cheap and great for a NY hotel! http://www.belvederehotelnyc.com/ The Hilton Garden Inn It's pretty much in the same location as the Belvedere but on the main road. It is also around the same price. http://www.belvederehotelnyc.com/ There is a hostel in Manhatten, Not sure where. But here is the link for the website:- http://www.bigapplehostel.com/ Places to see! Where do you start? 1.) Go up either the Rockefeller Center Or Empire State! Amazing views! Approx $18.00/ $20.00 2.) A walk around Central Park/ Bike Ride/ Horse + Cart ride. 3.) Visit Ground Zero Museam + The Site. (World Trade Center) 4.) Take a boat trip around the Statue Of Liberty. It goes right up to the Statue so you can get good photos and it slows down then it goes around the sky line of NY + under one of the bridges and turns around, It doesn't let you get off at the statue, if you want to do that then get the other boat but you are stuck on the island for 45 mins, there is nothing else there (not good if cold + wet) Otherwise get the boat that goes around the Statue. 5.) Visit Times Square at day + night 6.) Go see a show on broadway (maybe) 7.) Shopping! 8.) Museams? Lots by Central Park. 9.) Take the 'Hop On Hop Off Bus'' And do the night tour on there it goes over the Manhatten Bridge to Brooklyn and you can watch the sun set over the skyline- amazing! You can also just hop on the bus anywhere and it will go around the city (two buses for upper + lower NY) it's good ticket is vaild for 48 hours cost about $48.00 but it;s worth it for a first time in NY. There is a grey line bus tour shop on Times Sqaure and you can get free maps, brochers and they have monthly booklets of what is happening in the city that month and other little bits in there. Good luck with everything and i hope you have a great trip!!

Can you please recommend reasonably priced hotels in London?

Q) I am planning a 7-day trip to London with wife and daughter in May 2007, and am looking for reasonably priced hotel accommodation in decent localities. Can you please recommend some decent and safe hotels (suitable for a couple in their 50's and a 22 year old daughter from India) priced about 70 UKP per night for the three of us? What localities would you recommend I concentrate my search on? The results on the net are quite mind-boggling.

A) The Strand Palace is cheap, but its apparantly terrible. A place to stay and that's it. Oh and a good location. But noisy, not clean, etc. Though again it is cheap. It's hard to get a nice good cheap hotel room in London. A quick look at tripadvisor.com brought these up as under 100 pounds per night and highly rated. http://www.tripadvisor.com/Hotel_Review?geo=186338&detail=214658&from=Home&inMonth=01/2007&inDay=10&outMonth=01/2007&outDay=17&adults=2&hs=hac01w:10023 http://www.tripadvisor.com/Hotel_Review?geo=186338&detail=287288&from=Home&inMonth=01/2007&inDay=10&outMonth=01/2007&outDay=17&adults=2&hs=hac01w:10023 http://www.tripadvisor.com/Hotel_Review?geo=186338&detail=192068&from=Home&inMonth=01/2007&inDay=10&outMonth=01/2007&outDay=17&adults=2&hs=hac01w:10023 Goodluck and check out sites like expedia.com

What are some good hotels to stay in near Shaftsbury Avenue and Covent Garden?

Q) I am going to London for work and am looking for some reasonably priced, but comfortable hotels to choose from so I can book my accommodation. I will only be in London for 10 days and as it is for business, staying in a hostel is not an option. By reasonable, I mean not a 5 star hotel. 3-4 would be fine. Thanks...

A) Shaftsbury Avenue [ near Piccadilly Circus ] and Covent Garden are good areas and there some alternatives in the 4 and 5 star brackets, listed here : http://www.cheaperthanhotels.co.uk/United-Kingdom/London/Piccadilly/ and here : http://www.cheaperthanhotels.co.uk/United-Kingdom/ The only advise i can give is find the highest star ratings with the lowest prices, by using the filters on he search results. Then use the maps to ensure the locality is suitable. A 10 minute walk in the area will cover a lot of options

Where can i find cheaper hotels in Rome that are near the Ancient City?

Q) I want it to be near the Trevi fountain and the Spanish Steps. Whats the nearest airport to all this? Or basicly which airports are closest to these attractions? and if anyone can reccomend hotels that are cheap and nearby that would be great. Thanks!

A) Rome's quite compact; you can walk between the Trevi fountain and the Spanish steps and the Colisseum and Vatican City very easily if you're reasonably fit. The main airport is the Fiumicino Airport though, and you ain't going to walk from there to the city, trust me, you'll be in a taxi for 30, maybe 45, minutes depending on the traffic. Stay at one of the hotels near the side of the Vatican City, and you'll be near the main escape to the airport and also well placed for walking the sites. (Although you could shell out and take an open-topped bus, and just get on and off when you like, but I think it's about 20 Euros these days so you might not want to pay). Re: Hotels, I'd recommend the Best Western Spring House. It's cheap and cheerful but just refurbished, so pleasant. (I was last there in February). http://en.venere.com/hotels_rome/vatikan/hotel_best_western_spring_house_hotel.html?ref=28475

Where should I look for summer jobs at europe hotels?

Q) Hello. Does anyone of you know where to search for a summer job at Hotels in Spain,France,Greece or other South European countries?(For job as event organizer and evening program organizer, animator.) Do you know any web addresses?

A) I think your best bet is to check the large job sites with different country sites i.e. http://www.stepstone.com and http://www.monster.com You could also check the large hotel chains and their contacts and job pages, i.e. Hilton etc.

I would love to work in posh hotels like hilton /The Ritz . How do i apply since my visa is still 5mths left?

Q) i have previous work experiences in 5star hotels, trying to get into posh UK hotels to get work experiences before getting back. Any feedbacks welcome.

A) No hotel of the quality you are looking for will employ you. First thing they will ask for is your work permit. If you don't have one, forget it as your employer can be jailed for employing you against Immigration rules. Secondly, with only 5 months left on what I assume is a social visa, you have no right to employment anyway.
